What is a marking gauge?

A marking gauge is a measuring tool used in woodworking projects – ideal for marking out lines or scribing on various surfaces before sawing, chiseling, or cutting. Most models have a radiused bottom edge ideal for sliding along the wood being marked, making it an easy tool to use.

How does a marking gauge work?

Ideally, the arm of the gauge usually is a board or a large metal rod that can slide up and down on an arm of wood or metal, locking it into place wherever necessary. It is held in place using clamps or wedges. Some gauges have a central arm with measurement points imprinted on them. A thumb screw adjusts the stem for effortless operation as well as making it easy to remove from the wood being worked on. In addition, most gauges have some sort of marking device at its end: pencil, pin, or pen.
